For You. For Us. For Emory.

Everyone who comes to campus – to live, work, or visit – will be responsible for doing their part to ensure our community’s safety as we access campus during the COVID-19 pandemic. Upon arriving on campus, residential students will receive a Welcome Kit with important safety items, including 2 reusable cloth masks and hand sanitizer, along with a health and safety brochure. Emory University also plans to provide a similar kit for non-residential students who may be on campus but cannot provide these materials on their own.

In addition to committing to the COVID-19 2020-2021 Emory Community Compact for Students, we are also asking all students to follow recommended public safety guidelines:

  • Self-monitoring: You must confirm that you do not have signs or symptoms of COVID-19 before coming to campus each day. If you have the following common symptoms, we ask that you stay home and contact Student Health Services (SHS) for a health assessment:

    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Fever
    • Chills
    • Muscle pain
    • Sore throat
    • Loss of taste or smell (without a stuffy nose)
    • Other less common potential COVID-19 symptoms identified by the CDC
  • Temperature checks: The university will conduct random temperature checks at various locations across campus.

  • Physical distancing: Physical distancing is mandatory! In addition to maintaining at least 6 feet (about two arms’ lengths) from other people at all times (including in classrooms, shared bathrooms, and common public and residential spaces), you should also avoid gathering in groups, stay away from crowded places or mass gatherings, and observe all signage for directions, elevator use, and other spaces.

  • Wear a clean face covering: Emory University requires CDC-compliant face coverings in public and common spaces, both indoor and outdoor. Wearing a face covering is NOT a substitute for physical distancing and you should stay at least 6 feet away from others even if you are wearing a face covering. You may only remove your face covering if you are alone and in a private space or eating in a public space while maintaining physical distance. If you cannot provide your own face covering, Emory may be able to provide one for you.

  • Cover coughs and sneezes: Use the inside of your elbow or a tissue to cover coughs and sneezes. Used tissues should be thrown in the trash and hands should be washed immediately with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol can be used. Emory will provide hand sanitizer stations at convenient locations throughout campus.

  • Wash your hands often: The secret recipe here actually isn’t so secret: soap + water + 20 seconds. You should wash your hands whenever you have been in a public space; after blowing your nose, sneezing, or coughing; before touching your eyes, nose, or mouth; after using the restroom or touching surfaces in shared or common spaces; and otherwise periodically throughout the day. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol. Emory will provide hand sanitizer stations at convenient locations throughout campus.

  • Clean and sanitize personal and common spaces: Campus residents are responsible for cleaning their own room/suite, including high-touch areas (such as doorknobs, light switches, sinks, study or eating surfaces, etc.), and suite bathrooms (if applicable). Most common EPA-registered household disinfectants work adequately for this purpose. Common areas and high-touch surfaces on campus (including classrooms, building entryways, elevator lobbies, shared residential spaces, shuttles, etc.) will be cleaned and disinfected by Campus Services throughout the day and/or overnight.

Moving Around Campus

As you walk around campus, you will see stickers, posters, and other signage on walls and floors designed to guide you and remind you to participate in public health practices. Please keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • Use stairs instead of elevators whenever possible. If you do have to use an elevator, avoid touching buttons with exposed hands or fingers and follow posted instructions about elevator capacity and where you should stand directionally.

  • Use of public or shared restrooms should be limited based on size to ensure 6 feet of distance between individuals.
