Women's Health

The mission for the women's health service at EUSHS is to provide comprehensive, innovative, quality health care in an integrated, multidisciplinary setting. We strive to set a new standard for students by inspiring collaboration with the student to produce comprehensive wellness.

Women's health services are offered for female students who wish to have gynecological care, family planning services and women's health education. EUSHS nurse practitioners and physicians provide our women's health services. EUSHS offers several contraceptive methods at reduced rates to eligible students. Colposcopy services are also available for women with abnormal cervical changes or with abnormal Pap smear results.

Yearly Female Examinations with PAP Smear
We provide both yearly female health examinations, and follow-up Pap smear examinations for abnormal pap smears. During the complete female yearly examination, we will perform a full history and examination. This includes a pelvic examination, breast examination, a heart, lung, head and neck, and a generalized examination. We recommend the initiation of your yearly PAP test screening examinations starting within 3 years of the onset of sexual activity or the age of 21, whichever comes first. During your yearly examination we will discuss sexually transmitted disease testing, your birth control options, and/or if appropriate we will talk about pre-conception counseling. We will also discuss self-breast examinations, diet and nutrition, exercise habits, alcohol and/or drug usage now or in the past, depression or anxiety issues, and any other problem you may be having. We may run blood tests or do other testing if appropriate. Sometimes if you have many issues to discuss, we will also make a follow up appointment. When you call or use "Your Patient Portal" to make an appointment for a Yearly Exam with a Pap test, please specify that the visit is for a First or Subsequent Women's Annual/Pap test so that we can allot the proper amount of time for this visit (usually about 30-45 minutes). Remember that if you do not keep your appointment, there is a $15 no show fee. A doctor or nurse practitioner performs yearly examinations with Pap test visits, and you may request a specific practitioner.

General Female Physical Examinations
This is the full examination WITHOUT the Pap test. Sometimes the Pap is not necessary or required, (for example, if you have not had sexual activity yet and are under the age of 21). Another reason to have a general examination is if you had your Pap test done at home with another doctor and you wish to have a general examination with us. This visit allows us to get to know you, examine you and be sure that you are receiving care for your total health. We will discuss your medical history, any medical conditions you have, medications, breast health, self-breast examinations, diet, exercise, alcohol and/or drug use, depression or anxiety, and any other problem you may be having. We may run blood tests or do other testing if appropriate. Sometimes if you have many issues to discuss, we will also make a follow up appointment. When you make your appointment for this exam, specify that you would like to be seen for a Complete Physical Examination, and the proper time will be given for your visit- usually about 30-45 minutes. If you do not keep your appointment, there is a $15 no show fee. A doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant performs general examinations.

Gynecological or Breast Concerns
We provide office visits and examinations for any breast health or gynecological concern. Examples would be vaginal discharge, or feeling a breast lump. For these types of concerns, you may make an appointment with your provider for a regular office visit, or a follow-up visit (not called a Pap test visit).

Abnormal Pap Test/Colposcopy
Colposcopy is offered monthly during the school year. During a colposcopy, generally done when a woman has an abnormal Pap test, the Colposcopist will examine you as if they are doing a Pap test, but additionally will look with a microscope (called a colposcope) into the vagina, and at the cervix. The provider will also take one or two small biopsy samples of the areas where the Pap test was abnormal. Colposcopy appointments are made only on referral from one of our EUSHS women's health providers. Please check with your insurance, if it is NOT the student insurance, at to the coverage for this type of visit. Sometimes your insurance will pay partially or not at all. Students on the student health insurance are covered completely for this procedure done here at EUSHS. Remember to show up 15 minutes prior to your visit. If you do not keep your colposcopy appointment, there is a $50 no show fee.

Gynecology Consultation
A Gynecology consultation is available at EUSHS for any gynecological issue that your provider feels would be best handled by a gynecologist. Gynecology specialist appointments are made only on referral from one of our EUSHS women's health providers. Gynecology specialist appointments may be recommended for recurrent vaginal discharge, pain with intercourse, irregular periods, pelvic pain, endometriosis, IUD (intrauterine device) consultation, fibroids, ovarian cysts, and many other gynecological conditions. Our Gynecology consultation and follow up clinic occur twice per month during the school year. Check with your provider to see whether you need a visit in with the Gynecologist.

STD Screening and Treatment
We offer full confidential STI evaluation and screening at EUSHS Women's Health Services. At these appointments, we will discuss which tests are needed, costs for the testing, and follow-up for your results. If you are worried about contracting an STI, worried about any symptoms you or your partner may have, or you simply want to have screening or a conversation with one of our providers, we are available. All you need to do is simply make an appointment to see any provider. We ALSO can and do suggest STI screening at your Yearly Physical Exam with Pap test, so if you are due for your yearly exam, we will do all of this at one visit. If you wish to have Anonymous HIV testing with our Sexual Health Educator, you may make an appointment for anonymous testing.

Screening for Depression/Anxiety
Depression and anxiety are common on the college campus, and women also have a higher incidence of depression than men. We are here to talk to you about these issues. Women also can suffer from PMS (Pre-Menstrual Syndrome), and occasionally a more serious form of PMS called PMDD (Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder). Please feel free to make an appointment to see a provider, in addition to an appointment, if needed, at the Counseling Center (404-727-7450). At Student Health Services, we will discuss your symptoms, including any physical symptoms you are having like trouble sleeping or change in appetite, and we can discuss the possibility of medications. Many women's health providers at EUSHS are skilled and available to prescribe medications for this purpose.

Eating Disorders Consultations

Any issues regarding disordered eating, including diagnosed or undiagnosed Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating, or any variation of these, are issues we are comfortable seeing here at EUSHS. We have our own team, called the EDS (Eating Disorders Solutions Team), which includes Carol Kelly, RD and clinicians from the Counseling Center . EDS members confidentially collaborate regarding the care of students with Eating Disorders. We offer a comprehensive array of outpatient services including medical, psychological and nutritional care. We also keep updated on the latest information about the treatment of Eating Disorders. If you have symptoms that suggest an Eating Disorder, please make an appointment to see a women's health provider, and we will begin discussing what you have been experiencing. When you make an appointment, it is usually best for you to schedule a complete exam. However, if you would simply like to talk, make a regular appointment for a follow-up visit or consultation.
