Group Offerings - Fall 2010
For many Emory students group counseling is the very best way to get the help that they need. Groups are open to registered Emory students. They are free of any charge and participation is confidential. Group meeting times will be based on expressed interest and student needs.

Eating Disorder’s Group
Date and Time: Thursday 4:00-5:00 p.m.
Group Facilitators: Cynthia Whitehead-LaBoo, Ph.D. and Leanna Fortunato, M.S.
Description: This group will benefit students who would like to discuss feelings and explore issues related to eating disorders and body image.
Graduate Women’s Group
Date and Time: Monday, 3:00-4:30 p.m.
Group Facilitators: Mary Lisa Henry, M.S.W., Ph.D. and Janice Harewood, Ph.D.
Description: The purpose of this therapy group is to help members explore why they think, feel and act in the manner they do. Awareness of this kind can often lead to greater freedom in making life choices. The group process enables members to support and challenge others, as well as be supported and challenged. Group process often leads to greater awareness of the impact one has on others.
Tools for Tranquility Group
Date and Time: Thursday, 1:00-2:30 p.m.
Group Facilitators: Gabriela Ramirez-Leon, Psy.D. and Sharon Harp, LMSW
Description: The purpose of this group is to help students examine the impact of stress on their lives with particular emphasis on the mind-body connection. The group takes a hands-on approach in helping students develop a personalized “toolbox” of positive coping strategies for managing anxiety and enhancing overall well-being. Some topics to be covered include: practicing relaxation techniques, maintaining positive self-esteem, promoting school-life balance, as well as improving interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
Appetite Awareness Training for Weight Concerns
Group Facilitator: Linda W. Craighead, Ph.D.
Date and Time: Friday, 12:15-1:15 p.m.
Description: This group will benefit students who are normal weight or higher and are concerned about their control over eating. The group is not appropriate for individuals who are underweight or are using compensatory behaviors. Members will learn skills to get back in touch with internal feelings of hunger and fullness and practice using those feelings to eat in a way that feels healthy but prevents weight gain and may facilitate weight loss if that is desired.
Out at Emory Group
Date and Time: Monday, 3:00 -4:30 p.m.
Group Facilitators: Ben Stillman, Psy.D. and Jessica Kordansky, Ed.S
Description: Group for students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and/or questioning. While issues regarding sexual identity are often explored, this group aims to provide students with a safe environment in which to explore other aspects of their lives, including but not limited to academics, spirituality, family relationships, other interpersonal relationships, and coping with intolerance.
Thriving after Surviving
Date and Time: Wednesday, 3:00-4:30 p.m.
Group Facilitators: Colleen Duffy, Ph.D., and Kamilah Jones, MSW
Description: This therapy group is for women who have survived a sexual assault. The purpose of the group is for members to receive and provide support and care. This group will also help you improve relationships with those you care about. We will explore current life issues as they have been impacted by the assault. Participants will feel empowered and competent to live full enriched lives.
Interpersonal Group
Date and Time: Thursday, 1:00-2:30 p.m.
Group Facilitators: Dominique Harmon, LCSW, and Lauren Moffitt, B.A.
Description: This group is a mixed gender group for undergraduate students with diverse life experiences yet a common desire to become more aware of patterns of interaction that interfere with experiencing fulfilling relationships. Through “in the moment” interaction with fellow group members, participants will begin to identify and increase their understanding of persistent automatic thoughts, feelings, and maladaptive behaviors & reactions, in interpersonal relationships.
